Variants
The Ajax family uses a common hull and drive system across six distinct configurations:
- Ajax: the core reconnaissance variant, armed with the 40mm CTAS cannon. This is the primary fighting vehicle
- Ares: armoured personnel carrier, transporting infantry in the reconnaissance role
- Athena: command and control vehicle, providing a command node for armoured formations
- Argus: engineer reconnaissance vehicle, for route clearance and obstacle assessment
- Atlas: armoured recovery vehicle, recovering and extracting damaged vehicles under fire
- Apollo: armoured repair and recovery vehicle, conducting battlefield repairs

Armament (Ajax)

Sensors and electronics
Ajax is one of the most digitally sophisticated armoured vehicles in the British Army’s history. It carries a comprehensive sensor suite including a panoramic commander’s sight, a gunner’s sight with thermal imaging and laser rangefinding, and a Battle Management System (BMS) that integrates with the Army’s wider digital battlespace architecture. This connectivity – the ability to share real-time targeting and situational awareness data across a networked formation – is central to Ajax’s intended role.
Programme history
The Ajax programme has been among the most troubled in British defence procurement history. Originally contracted in 2014 with deliveries expected from 2017, the programme suffered years of delays related to noise and vibration issues that caused health symptoms in test and evaluation crews. The problems resulted in extended suspension of trials and deliveries, parliamentary select committee scrutiny, and significant cost growth.
Initial Operating Capability was eventually declared in November 2025, with just 147 vehicles delivered. Training was briefly suspended in the same month after personnel reported symptoms during an exercise, before being resumed following an Army Safety Investigation Team report in April 2026 which found that recorded noise and vibration levels were below legal exposure limits.
The remaining 442 vehicles are planned for delivery through 2028.
Strategic role
Ajax is intended to be the British Army’s primary armoured reconnaissance platform – the eyes of an armoured formation, operating ahead of and within the battle area to identify enemy positions, routes, and obstacles, and to pass that information to commanders and weapons systems. In the modern networked battlespace, Ajax’s digital architecture makes it as much a sensor node as a fighting vehicle in its own right.
The programme’s troubled history has delayed the retirement of the CVR(T) family, some of which have been in service since the 1970s, and has meant the British Army has operated a worrying capability gap in armoured reconnaissance for longer than intended.
