At its core, Voyant’s technology tackles a problem growing more acute across every domain: the modern battlespace is outpacing the sensors designed to monitor it. Threats are smaller, faster and quieter. Environments are cluttered and contested. And the volume of sensor data now routinely outstrips the ability of operators to process it in time to act.
A new way of interpreting sensor data
Voyant’s answer is a single software platform built around advanced particle-filter algorithms and data fusion. Rather than requiring new hardware, the software works with existing radar, sonar, electro-optical and electronic warfare systems, fusing their outputs into a single trusted operational picture and surfacing actionable intelligence at the speed the threat demands. It’s a bit like having a team of detectives sifting through all of the evidence in real time, making better deductions than existing systems.
The company points to several operationally demonstrated use cases. Its software has been used to detect and track low-signature aerial threats in cluttered environments, counter unmanned systems across maritime and aerial domains, improve submarine detection using existing sonar without hardware changes, and maintain autonomous navigation when GPS is denied, a capability demonstrated to TRL 7 with the UK MOD.
Voyant was founded on research from Professor Simon Maskell, its Chief Scientific Officer and a leading academic in probabilistic tracking and Bayesian inference. The company is led commercially by CEO James Norwood, with CTO Dr. Lyudmil Vladimirov overseeing the engineering platform. Chairman Paul Boardman brings prior experience scaling and exiting defence technology businesses.
Exciting times for Voyant
Voyant are on the brink of Series A funding, currently they have several projects in testing and evaluation, but as ever by the very nature of the process they can’t talk about them yet – I think we can expect some exciting news from them soon though, this technology is another part in the jigsaw of facilitating autonomous systems to do some remarkable things.
The timing of the company’s push to market reflects a broader shift in how the UK and its NATO allies are thinking about capability. Software-defined warfare, accelerated by lessons from Ukraine and the rapid proliferation of autonomous systems, is reshaping procurement priorities, and Voyant is positioning itself as a repeatable platform play that can scale across missions, domains and markets.
