London-based Fering Technologies has entered the competition to replace the British Army’s ageing Land Rover and Pinzgauer fleets, submitting a bid for the Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) programme.
The company is putting forward its Pioneer platform, one of the few all British-designed and engineered vehicles in the running, and it is possibly the most advanced of the contenders. Built around a modular carbon chassis, the Pioneer can be reconfigured in the field without specialist tools to cover all nine vehicle variants required by the MoD. The programme, valued at an estimated £2 billion, aims to deliver a common base platform with a fleet potentially exceeding 9,500 vehicles.
Hybrid power and extreme range
The Pioneer is powered by a hybrid electric system that delivers a range of 7,010km, and can export up to 60kWh of power to onboard systems or deployable field equipment, making it well suited to operations in areas with limited logistics support. In EV-only mode, the vehicle can run in complete silence for up to 80km, reducing its acoustic and thermal signature in the field.

Capable across terrain and roles
Designed for extreme terrain, the Pioneer features a four-wheel independent air spring suspension system with 18 bar active suspension and Central Tyre Inflation System. Its powertrain delivers 480 Nm of torque to each axle, giving it a 60% gradient climb capability, 51-degree traverse angle and 0.75m step climb. It is fully submersible to IP67.
The vehicle supports heavy duty ring mounts for the M-2, MK-47, M-240 and Remote Weapon Station, and is smoke launcher compatible. It can also be operated remotely for autonomous missions.
With a curb weight of 1,750kg and a maximum payload of 1,550kg, the Pioneer is air transportable by CH-47, CH-53 and C-130 aircraft, and is low velocity airlift deployable.
A British vehicle for British forces
Gareth Reece, Chief Commercial Officer at Fering Technologies, said:
“We have designed the Pioneer platform here in London and will build the vehicle in the UK under a manufacturing partnership for the UK MoD, so that we can deliver the best of British innovation and engineering to support British forces as they face the challenges of the coming decades.”
“A vehicle that can move quietly, sit quietly and power the equipment around it is an entirely different tactical proposition to a diesel utility truck. Pioneer is redefining expeditionary capability and offering the next generation of advanced operational independence for land forces.”
DVD 2026
The Pioneer and Pioneer X specialist operational mobility variant will be on display at DVD 2026 on the Fering Technologies stand (OR-38), with live demonstrations running on the off-road track throughout the event.
