Kraken K3 Scout USV: At a Glance

Last updated: September 2026 | The Kraken K3 Scout is the Royal Navy's new high-speed uncrewed surface vessel, built for a hybrid fleet and capable of being dropped from an aircraft into the sea.

The Kraken K3 Scout is an 8.4-metre composite-hulled uncrewed surface vessel (USV) designed and built by Fareham-based Kraken Technology Group. In March 2026 the Royal Navy ordered 20 vessels under Project Beehive, a programme aimed at accelerating experimentation with autonomous maritime systems. A competitive tender that included BAE Systems, Kongsberg, and L3Harris, among 12 bidders in total, resulted in Kraken winning the £10.25 million contract. The K3 Scout is now in series production at the Blohm+Voss yard in Hamburg, under the Rheinmetall Kraken joint venture, and entered service with Coastal Forces Squadron and 47 Commando Royal Marines.

Programme overview

Kraken Technology Group was founded in 2020 by Mal Crease, who brought experience from offshore powerboat racing to bear on hull design. The K3 Scout’s 55-knot top speed reflects that lineage. The company positioned the vessel as a low-cost, mass-producible platform with a modular payload bay that can be reconfigured between missions without a full refit.

The Royal Navy’s Project Beehive, announced in November 2025, was designed to build a standing uncrewed surface capability on the back of earlier Rattler USV trials. It aims to “accelerate experimentation and help create the concepts needed for the hybrid fleet,” in the words of the Navy’s own programme description. Rather than procuring a bespoke military design, the Navy ran a competitive tender and selected a commercially developed platform, reflecting a broader shift in how the Royal Navy approaches uncrewed systems acquisition.

The K3 Scout was selected over rivals including major primes after a competitive process. Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Paul Beatie described the contract as “a significant milestone in our journey towards a hybrid navy,” integrating autonomous technology with existing crewed capability.

Programme status

In service with the Royal Navy. The first vessels were delivered to Coastal Forces Squadron and 47 Commando Royal Marines following contract award in March 2026. Series production is underway at the Blohm+Voss yard in Hamburg under the Rheinmetall Kraken joint venture, which was formed in August 2025 and consolidated when Rheinmetall completed its acquisition of Naval Vessels Lürssen in March 2026.

In July 2026 the K3 Scout completed what Kraken and the Royal Navy described as the world’s first extracted-load airdrop of an uncrewed surface vessel, deployed from a Royal Air Force A400M transport aircraft over the North Sea. Four drops were completed over six days, at 1,300 feet altitude in seas up to Sea State 4 (that’s ‘moderate to rough’ with waves up to 2.5m high). There seem to be mixed reports on the outcome of the drop, being described both as ‘successful’ and ‘functionally crippled‘.

Capabilities

The Kraken K3 Scout is designed as a multi-role platform. Its 600 kg modular payload bay can be loaded with different sensor and effects packages depending on the mission, without structural modification to the vessel. Demonstrated and stated capabilities include:

  • Maritime domain awareness and patrol
  • Force protection and escort
  • Electro-optical surveillance and reconnaissance
  • Radar and sonar integration
  • Electronic warfare and counter-uncrewed systems operations
  • C5ISR functions (command, control, communications, computers, cyber, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance)
  • Littoral and coastal operations
  • Airdrop insertion from A400M transport aircraft (world first demonstrated July 2026)
  • Sustained autonomous operation for up to 30 days
  • Remote piloting at ranges exceeding 150 miles, demonstrated in NATO and Royal Navy trials

The vessel operates in both remote-piloted and supervised autonomous modes, with human-on-the-loop oversight. Its navigation, route-holding, and collision avoidance functions are handled autonomously once a mission is programmed.

Industrial footprint

Kraken has built a multi-nation production base, a deliberate strategy aimed at qualifying the K3 Scout for allied procurement:

  • United Kingdom: Design and initial production, Fareham
  • Germany: Series production at Blohm+Voss, Hamburg (Rheinmetall Kraken joint venture)
  • United States: Two vessels contracted to Anduril Industries (April 2026), targeting US Navy interest; USSOCOM awarded Kraken a $49 million development agreement in November 2025
  • Canada: Production line established at Davie Shipbuilding via Inocea Group

The company completed a $175 million Series B funding round in July 2026, valuing Kraken at $1 billion. Investors included the NATO Innovation Fund, Rheinmetall, Inocea Group, and DTCP. Earlier backing came from the UK National Security Strategic Investment Fund and Estonia’s SmartCap.

Security concerns: Chinese components

In August 2026 it emerged that cameras fitted to the Kraken K3 Scout vessels had been transmitting “heartbeat” signals to an IP address in China, identified during a routine MoD cyber vulnerability assessment. The MoD found no evidence that any data had been accessed or compromised, and internet connectivity to the affected cameras was removed. Variants and related platforms

The Kraken K3 Scout is the baseline model in Kraken’s growing family of uncrewed maritime vehicles:

  • K3 Scout Medium – The baseline multi-role vessel, now in Royal Navy service
  • K4 Manta – A surface-to-submerged vehicle capable of high-speed surface transit and covert submerged operations; under development, with USSOCOM interest
  • K5 Kraken – A maritime precision engagement vessel described as a coastal gunship; in development
  • K7 Sabre – A larger design with payload capacity above 454 kg, being built by Anduril for US Navy evaluation

What comes next

This is early days for the Royal Navy’s autonomous systems, these 20 K3 Scouts will be used primarily for training, tactical development, and warfare experimentation rather than frontline operations in the near term. The intent is to build the doctrine, tactics, and crew expertise needed before autonomous systems are integrated into standing task groups.

Internationally, the Kraken K3 Scout’s airdrop capability opens a potential role in rapid-response scenarios, deploying USVs into contested maritime areas without requiring a surface ship or port infrastructure nearby. The UK Ministry of Defence’s indication in May 2026 that the type could feature in a Strait of Hormuz mission ‘should they be required’, a route critical to global energy supply, suggests the operational ambition extends well beyond home waters.

For Kraken, the Royal Navy contract is a reference sale in a competitive market. With multi-nation production established, US Special Operations Command funding secured, and a billion-dollar valuation, the company has moved quickly from startup to serious contender in NATO’s emerging uncrewed maritime ecosystem.
