The Russian vessel Yantar, long labelled a spy ship by Western security analysts, has again drawn attention after UK defence officials said it was operating close to British waters in the last two weeks. The UK government stated that Royal Navy ships and RAF maritime patrol aircraft were deployed to shadow the vessel north of Scotland, following reports of unusual behaviour that included some form of laser illumination directed at an RAF aircraft.
Although Moscow describes Yantar as an ‘oceanographic research ship’, the vessel is operated by GUGI (Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research), which is a known arm of the Russian Ministry of Defence linked to the Russian Navy. Its fleet specialises in seabed operations, deep diving missions and intelligence gathering on underwater infrastructure.

According to UK defence officials, Yantar approached the edge of UK territorial waters and then began activity described as loitering near areas that contain critical undersea cables. HMS Somerset was one of the Royal Navy ships deployed to shadow it. RAF Poseidon aircraft also monitored the vessel’s movements from above. Exact distances and locations have not been publicly disclosed, although officials have stated that the activity was close enough to trigger a heightened response.

The systems list the vessel in northern European waters within recent weeks, sometimes placing it in the North Sea or the approaches to the Baltic. The UK MOD is believed to rely on classified sensors and satellite data, which provide a far more consistent picture of the ship’s course.

Western analysts have warned for several years that Yantar has the capability to inspect, map or potentially disrupt undersea communications cables and energy links. These cables carry the majority of global internet and financial traffic. They are vulnerable to both physical disruption and covert tampering. The ship carries manned and unmanned submersibles that can reach significant depths, along with sensors used for seabed mapping. This combination of technology has led NATO members to treat every close pass of Yantar as a security issue.
UK ministers now characterise these encounters as part of a broader pattern of Russian activity often described as grey zone behaviour. This phrase refers to the use of intelligence operations and harassment tactics that fall short of open warfare but create strategic uncertainty. The alleged laser illumination incident fits this pattern. According to UK statements, a British aircraft monitoring the vessel was temporarily affected by a directed beam of light while conducting a routine surveillance flight.
How much is known and how much is guesswork?
There is a clear difference between what is confirmed publicly and what is inferred from capability. Public AIS tracking gives only a partial view of the vessel’s movements. The detailed picture is held by the Royal Navy and its allies, who rely on radar and surveillance aircraft. The UK government insists that Yantar poses a significant concern, especially as geopolitical tensions continue to rise in northern European waters. However there is no verified evidence that the ship has carried out sabotage, and officials have avoided making direct allegations. Instead they suggest that the intent behind its movements remains ambiguous and should be closely monitored.

Defence Secretary John Healey described the use of lasers against RAF aircrew as “deeply dangerous” and added “I’ve changed the Navy’s rules of engagement so we can follow more closely, monitor more closely the activities of the Yantar when it’s in our wider waters.”
The MOD are fast tracking measures that can monitor and counter undersea threats, for the time being however, along with drones flying near European airports and military installations, it seems to be another stage of Russias sabre rattling policy.
