Jackal 3 Extenda: The high-mobility weapons platform family grows

Instantly recognisable by its boldly open frame, long travel suspension and aggressive stance, the Jackal family was designed to prioritise speed, mobility and firepower over heavy armour.

The Jackal 3 is the latest iteration for this programme that emerged from urgent operational needs during the early years of the Afghanistan campaign. The outdated Wolf and Snatch Land Rovers were a liability in this particular theatre, offering minimal protection against small arms fire and absolutely none against land mines or IED’s, swiftly getting them the nickname of ‘mobile coffins’. British forces required a vehicle that offered enhanced protection from IEDs and that was capable of long range patrols across desert and semi-desert terrain. The ability to mount heavier weapons was crucial, in doing so, it filled a critical capability gap for British forces operating across vast, hostile terrain where situational awareness and speed mattered more than passive protection. In spirit not unlike the heavily modified jeeps of the LRDG in the Second World War.

Replacing the Snatch Land Rover ‘mobile coffin’

Rather than developing a vehicle from scratch, the Ministry of Defence selected the proven Supacat High Mobility Transporter (HMT) platform. Supacat, a UK based specialist vehicle manufacturer, adapted its design to meet British Army requirements resulting in the Jackal 1, officially designated as the ‘Vehicle Mounted Close Combat Overwatch’ system.

The design philosophy was clear, Jackal would trade enclosed armour for speed, visibility and tactical agility. This approach reflected lessons learned from special forces and light armoured operations, where mobility and situational awareness often proved decisive.

Over successive upgrades, the Jackal has evolved into a mature family of high mobility weapons platforms. With the introduction of Jackal 2 and the latest Jackal 3 Extenda with an extra axle, the British Army continues to rely on the platform as a core reconnaissance and fire support asset.

Design and Layout

Jackal vehicles feature a distinctive open cab, which means the crew are exposed yet allows exceptional all round visibility, a vital attribute in reconnaissance and overwatch roles. The crew typically consists of a driver, commander and gunner, with additional space for passengers, equipment and ammunition.

The chassis is based on a high mobility 4×4 configuration with long travel suspension. This allows Jackal to maintain high speeds, up to 49mph over rough ground and 80mph on road, while reducing crew fatigue. The wheeled vehicles deliver performance that challenges tracked vehicles.

Protection is provided primarily through mobility, speed and firepower. Armour is limited and modular, focused on armour plating beneath the crew compartment and on the vehicle sides for critical components. With blast mitigating seating the Jackal exceeded the protection of the Land Rover. This reflects the operational doctrine behind Jackal, which emphasises avoiding contact rather than absorbing it.

Jackal 1 in Service

Jackal 1 entered service in the mid 2000s and was rapidly deployed to Afghanistan. It quickly gained a reputation among crews for its speed and handling. Jackal patrols could cover vast areas, escort convoys, provide overwatch for dismounted troops and respond rapidly to developing situations.

However, operational use also revealed shortcomings. Payload capacity was limited, protection against mines and IEDs could be better, and the vehicle’s endurance on long patrols needed improvement. These lessons directly informed the next stage of development.

Jackal 2: Increased Capability

Jackal 2 was introduced as an updated and more robust version of the original design. The vehicle featured a strengthened chassis, increased payload capacity and enhanced blast protection. Changes were made to suspension and driveline components to improve reliability under sustained operational use.

The extra payload allowed Jackal 2 to carry more fuel, ammunition and equipment, extending patrol range and duration. Weapon mounts were refined to better support HMG’s, grenade machine guns and anti armour systems.

In British Army service, Jackal 2 became closely associated with light cavalry units and formations such as the Household Cavalry Regiment and Light Dragoons. Its role expanded beyond Afghanistan to include training and readiness tasks for a range of expeditionary contingencies. The Jackal is also favoured by the Royal Marines and Parachute Regiment.

Jackal 3 Extenda: The Latest Evolution

The most recent development in the family is Jackal 3, also known as Jackal 3 Extenda. This variant represents a significant evolution rather than a simple incremental update. Supacat redesigned the platform to address emerging requirements for greater flexibility, survivability and payload.

The defining feature of the Jackal 3 Extenda is its modular rear architecture. The modular extra axle allows for an extended rear deck which can be configured for additional crew seating, increased cargo capacity or mission specific equipment. This allows a single vehicle type to be tailored for reconnaissance, command, fire support or logistics roles.

Jackal 3 also benefits from further improvements in blast protection, suspension and automotive performance. While it remains an open vehicle, attention has been paid to crew survivability through energy absorbing seating and improved underbody protection. The vehicle is designed to integrate modern communications, sensors and battlefield management systems.

From an operational perspective, Jackal 3 Extenda supports the British Army’s shift toward more flexible and modular force structures. Units can adapt vehicles rapidly to different mission profiles without requiring entirely separate fleets.

Armament and Firepower

One of Jackal’s defining characteristics is its firepower. The primary weapon mount typically supports a .50 HMG or a 40 mm grenade machine gun. Secondary mounts allow additional crew served weapons to be fitted, providing overlapping arcs of fire.

This level of firepower allows Jackal patrols to dominate ground visually and kinetically, particularly in overwatch roles. It also enables the vehicle to support dismounted troops effectively, acting as a mobile base of fire during manoeuvre.

Strengths and Limitations

Jackal’s strengths lie in its mobility, speed and situational awareness. It excels in reconnaissance, screening and rapid response tasks. Crews value its handling and the sense of control it offers in complex terrain. The platform is also relatively easy to maintain compared to heavier armoured vehicles.

Its limitations are equally well understood. The open design exposes crews to environmental conditions and small arms fire. Protection against large IEDs is inherently lower than that of heavily armoured platforms. As a result, Jackal is not suitable for all threat environments and must be employed with appropriate tactics.

These trade offs are deliberate. Jackal is not intended to replace protected patrol vehicles or infantry fighting vehicles. Instead, it complements them by providing capabilities that heavier platforms cannot deliver.

Manufacturing and UK Industrial Context

Supacat, based in Honiton, Devon, remains the design authority partnered with Babcock as the manufacturer for the Jackal family. Supacat has built a strong reputation for specialist high mobility vehicles, with Jackal representing one of its most successful programmes. UK based Babcock manufacturing and support have ensured close collaboration between industry and the Army.

Babcock UK are contracted to manufacture 53 of the six-wheeled ‘Extenda’ variants, with vehicles rolling off the production line now. They have already delivered 70 Jackal 2 models. Ongoing support contracts and upgrade pathways have allowed the platform to remain relevant as operational needs evolve. Lessons learned from deployments continue to feed back into design improvements.

The Future of Jackal

Jackal remains firmly embedded in British Army’s vehicle fleet, particularly within light cavalry and reconnaissance units. The introduction of Jackal 3 Extenda ensures that the platform can continue to evolve alongside changes in force structure and operational concepts.

As the Army places greater emphasis on dispersed operations, rapid manoeuvre and information gathering, high mobility platforms like Jackal are likely to retain their importance. Future enhancements may include improved sensors, greater integration with unmanned systems and further refinements in protection and endurance.
