The first Boxer vehicles to roll off the Telford production line at Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL), have been delivered to Bovington to begin service as a training platform.
The UK joined the Boxer programme in 2018, with a £2.8 billion contract awarded to supply more than 500 vehicles in multiple variants. Deliveries are underway, with the fleet expected to form the backbone of the Army’s Armoured Brigade Combat Teams (ABCTs) from the early 2030s.
Boxer is a highly modular, diesel powered 8 wheeled armoured vehicle designed to be rapidly adapted for different missions through interchangeable mission modules. UK variants will include infantry carriers, command vehicles, specialist carriers, and ambulances. The platform offers high levels of protection, mobility and digital connectivity, ensuring soldiers are protected and effective on the modern battlefield.
Production for the British fleet is centred in the UK, with Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) in Telford and WFEL in Stockport building the majority of vehicles, supporting over 1,000 skilled jobs and sustaining a UK supply chain of more than 60 companies. The Boxer is equipped with advanced digital systems to enable integration with next-generation communications and command networks. Its high mobility and protection levels make it suited for both high-intensity conflict and peace support operations.
The introduction of Boxer represents a step change in the modernisation of the British Army’s armoured capability, replacing ageing fleets of Warrior and Mastiff vehicles and providing a vehicle designed for future operational environments. Its modularity ensures long-term adaptability as threats evolve, while its digital architecture supports integration into multi-domain operations.
Boxer also reflects the UK government’s commitment to invest in sovereign defence manufacturing, creating jobs and securing industrial resilience. As the Army modernises, Boxer will form a key element of its Future Soldier programme, ensuring British forces remain mobile, protected, and combat-effective against adversaries.
